BRINGING ROAD SAFETY TRAINING UP TO SPEED

How Longevity Consulting partnered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to clear the path for fast, efficient, and cost-effective road safety training.

Transformation is a process. Done right, it begins with bringing a fresh perspective to the people, processes, and technologies involved with a given challenge—and ends with strategically reimagining those elements to drive better performance.

Training hits traffic

It was in the Fall of 2016 when the director of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) decided enough was enough. Once again, a scheduled safety training day had arrived, but the updated training materials hadn’t—which meant our highways weren’t as safe as they should be.

Knowing the safety of our nation’s roads—and the people who travel them—was compromised with each delayed or out-of-date training, he had to get to the root of the problem quickly. He turned to a trusted name in Federal modernization: Longevity Consulting.

Road safety is everything to the FMCSA

The FMCSA’s National Training Center trains 20,000 police officers and other Federal employees a year on the latest best practices for addressing unsafe driving on the roads, as well as current policies for keeping trucking and bus companies compliant.

Plotting a turnaround

Longevity’s seasoned team of strategists, and technologists, and problem solvers was tasked with addressing a host of inefficiencies in the FMCSA’s training processes—from delayed course materials to late travel vouchers.

Like any Federal initiative, a successful transformation requires all the right elements coming together just right. Longevity coordinated all the moving pieces, and hit the ground running:

The road to transformation

Transformation is a process. Done right, it begins with bringing a fresh perspective to the people, processes, and technologies involved with a given challenge—and ends with strategically reimagining those elements to drive better performance.

In the case of the FMCSA training delays, Longevity did the following:

  • Step 1. Look and listen
Longevity’s experts talked to federal and contract staff members, mapped out current processes, and compiled a host of other data to give us a high-level picture of what was working, and where things were breaking down.
  • Step 2. Monitor and measure
With a clear understanding of the current state established, Longevity’s team began monitoring day-to-day work outputs and assessing employee performance to identify the best opportunities for improvement and optimization.
  • Step 3. Improve and iterate
By consolidating multiple technology systems, improving coordination between subject matter experts and instructional designers, and creating standardized operating procedures, Longevity was able to increase performance across the board.

Arriving in a better place

In the end, successful transformation comes down to measurable results—and the FMCSA saw an immediate and remarkable improvement in their processes:

Lightning fast delivery

Now 95% of course materials arrive 2 weeks prior to course starting—instead of approximately 60%

Zero process delays

Processing of travel requests and vouchers have improved to 0 late vouchers over a 90-day period

Speedy turnarounds

Reduced examination processing time from 7 to 5 days which provided results to State POC and employees

Overall, these improvements cleared the way for the FMCSA and its National Training Center to deliver stellar service, ensuring every Federal employee has the up-to-date training they need, as soon they need it—and our roads are as safe as they can be.
