INTRODUCTION:

For many government agencies, cloud computing is an exciting and often uncharted territory. It’s a world where a whole new host of possibilities exist—but harnessing them can be complicated.

The North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP) discovered this in early 2019. The agency’s flagship website and learning management system were being controlled by a commercial entity and needed to be moved to the cloud and brought under government—but their current contractor lacked the know-how and accreditation to execute.

So they turned to Longevity Consulting’s extensive experience with orchestrating air-tight, iron-clad cloud migrations. Together we pursued authority to operate in haste.

Four stages to cloud migration

At Longevity headquarters, we put together a crackpot team including a project manager, web developer, LMS specialist, security system officer (SSO), security analyst, a documentation and reports consultant to execute with precision. Here’s how it unfolded:

Step 1: Assess

First, we assessed the current website and LMS—every component, security requirement, data point, and report. With a comprehensive understanding of all the various working pieces of the technology, we were armed with the information we needed to craft a plan of attack using our proven migration framework.

Step 2: Plan

Servers, databases, network components, security components, analytics—we brought them all together in a detailed blueprint for success. Standards were defined, documented, and compiled in a master document covering everything from hardware to databases to firewalls to proxy settings. Stakeholders signed off, and it was time to build.

Step 3: Build

Like a futuristic skyscraper, we architected the new cloud environment from the ground up.  Components were provisioned from Amazon Web Services—file storage, load balancing, Google analytics, and more. Once constructed, its exacting precision not only met NAMFP’s needs today, but was responsive enough to scale to tomorrow’s too.

Step 4: Test

Every corner of the structure was tested and fortified with a barrage of penetration tests, disaster recovery plans, privacy impact analytics, and more to ensure total protection against all cyber threats. Alongside The National Institute of Standards (NIST 800-53) and an independent party, we validated our work was secure and compliant.

In the cloud. And ready to soar.

Ultimately, the authority to operate was granted. The NAFMP was affirmed as a forward-thinking agency, and its constituents were safer and better served for it. Some of the key performance metrics included:

  • Higher Availability. Migration achieved an uptick from 95% availability environment to 99.9%.
  • Better Scalability. The new environment automatically scales to meet large upticks in volume to deliver seamless service.
  • Greater Security. Over 200 state-of-the-art controls earned the new system a “low” at-risk grading.
  • Enhanced Analytics. A wealth of reporting on traffic, users, and performance are now available on both the website and LMS.
  • Upgraded LMS. The latest version of the learning management system has more features, more flexibility, and mobile capabilities.
